I was just about to update my 'what's happening this week' page and happened to take a look at the Tourism Red Deer site for ideas. Looks like they beat me to the punch & now have an ongoing listing of events that are happening in & around the city. The format looks great & user friendly - well done folks!
So, if you're unsure of what to do this weekend, check out the Tourism Red Deer events page for some inspiration! The weather forecast looks decent - high teens & sunny. You have no excuse to stay inside!
Friday night is the drive in movie at Parkland Mall - they're playing Ferris Beuller's Day Off - prime example of a hometown tourist at his best!
I think we'll take part in the Country Drive showcase weekend. There are lots of places on the list that I've never been to before. Shake the Lake also looks like a blast... Let me know if you take in any of the events - I'd love to get some reviews!

Community Services Activity & Program Guide!
One of my favorite days of the season!! It almost makes the thought of summer ending bearable...
The Fall 2012 Community Services Activity and Program Guide will be available for viewing here on Monday, August 6. It will be delivered to homes in Red Deer County on Thursday, August 9, and to homes in Red Deer with newspapers or flyers on Friday, August 10.
Copies may also be picked up on and after August 10 at City Hall, Collicutt Centre, Culture Services Centre, G.H. Dawe Community Centre and the Recreation Centre.
Registration for City programs in the fall guide opens at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, August 14, online, by phone or in person at Collicutt Centre, G.H. Dawe Centre and the Recreation Centre.
I will try just about anything once and the 'Community Guide' helps me find classes, programs and general information on things I've been curious about. Since moving to the Red Deer area in 2005, I've taken to opportunity to try several different cooking classes, many types of fitness classes, tennis lessons and cross country ski lessons. I can't wait to see what the fall program offers!
Also, new this year, you can get gift cards to go toward programs in the guide! What a great idea for anyone (parents, grandparents, kids, teachers). Does Santa take requests this early? I've been good - I promise!

Heritage Ranch
A few weeks ago, I had a day off from my paying job, so I met up with some friends from my Red Deer Mommy's Social Club at Heritage Ranch for a playdate.
There is a new playground just west of the parking lot that is great for the kids. I especially liked it because it's kind of spread out so you can see your kids at all times vs having to constantly peek around bigger slides and things to see what kind of trouble they've gotten themselves into. Just to clarify, though, I'm not a fan of letting Owen just run around on his own at his age. I did look away for literally seconds, turned around & he was halfway up a ladder! That was my heart attack moment of the day.
After the playground, we all walked over to a fenced pasture where a few of the Ranch's horses were enjoying a snack. Little kids love animals. The horses at the ranch are very well trained & are used to strangers coming up to touch them, so I felt pretty comfortable letting Owen get close enough to pat one horse's nose. We were there for a little while, just repeating 'hi horsey' over & over. All in all, a successful playdate.
While I do love taking Owen on playdates, playground fun is definitely centered around the kids. Mommies don't seem to get a chance to visit since we're all running in different directions after the little ones. When they were all babies, it was easier to chat, but toddlers are a different story altogether. We'll just have to reserve the important topics for Mom's Night Out and focus on the children for now.

What is a Hometown Tourist?
Many moons ago, my then fiance & I lived on my tiny income as a temp in Calgary, while he was going to school full time. We had enough to pay the bills, but very little extra in the 'fun' budget. So, in order to take full advantage of our limited resources & because we were new to the city, we spent a lot of our free time as tourists in our new hometown. What a great way to get to know a place! We spoke with native Calgarians who had never come across some of the attractions and events we discovered.
Since those days, we got married, moved a few more times & now call Red Deer, Alberta home. Our son, Owen was born in January, 2011. I had the pleasure of taking a full year for maternity leave and was able to discover a few places & resources in Red Deer that I didn't know existed. The other major upside of my mat leave was that I met some great 'mommy' friends. It was amazing to hang out with these ladies & their kids to discover the world of entertaining babies together :)
I encourage everyone to try out 'Hometown Touristing'. What have you got to lose? Keep checking back for fun ideas!
